Duane Young, Nanaimo Search & Rescue

Chief of Operations

Our Command vehicle is up and running with new NX-5000 Digital radios as our primary SAR communications is complemented by similar portable radios. We have utilized the GPS tracking ability of the portables with Kenwood’s software to map the location of all teams in the field on a large wall display that greatly assists Planning & Management. This up-to-date equipment has made many of the operational tasks much easier. Thank you Kenwood.

John Moore, Eagle Valley Rescue

Vice President & Crew Chief

The Eagle Valley Rescue Society has attended several call since receiving the radio grant, During these calls the increased capability of the radios made a difference in the amount of time spent performing emergency operations Cutting the time running back and forth for tools and supplies, and increasing the effectiveness of crews on scene tenfold.

Lawrence Radford, Vice President

Grandforks Search and Rescue

When radios were stolen from their command post, Grandforks Search and Rescue, consisting in 24 volunteer members, were without radio communications. Without reliable communications, they would be unable to search their local area; requiring a nearby search team out of Castlegar, over an hour away, to be called. On average, people can walk 2 miles per hour. If a delay in response was to occur the search grid would increase significantly. Delays will also greatly reduce the search window should bad weather or darkness occur.

Hearing this, Kenwood sent Grandforks Search and Rescue 12 NEXEDGE digital radios to replace their stolen fleet. With the GPS functionality, Grandforks is able to easily locate their members on the ground at all times, and the Search Manager can efficiently coordinate the search effort.

“The GPS functionality has far exceeded our expectations and greatly enhanced our ability to search, for example, allowing us to find a dirt biker who was lost in a remote area. Responding to 22+ calls per year, and requirement for 24 hour / 7 day a week focused ground search activities – radio communications are critical.”

Herb Clements, Deputy Director/Deputy Fire Chief

Township of Springwater

Springwater Fire & Emergency Services have been exclusively utilizing KENWOOD mobile and portable radios for nine years – 17 mobile units and upwards of 40+ portables.

We have found the radio equipment as provided by KENWOOD meets all requirements of Ontario Fire Service Section 21 Advisory Committee Firefighters Guidance Note # 2-3:

  • Intrinsically safe radio ensembles
  • Ease of operation in full PPE
  • Multiple frequency (talk group) capabilities that enable effective fire ground communications
  • Features that may safeguard against accidental shut off or accidental channel changes
  • Durable (resistance from damage due to water, chemicals, rough handling, temperature extremes)
  • May-Day feature that provides instant notification to the fire ground when a firefighter(s) is in distress.

The equipment works flawlessly and stands up to everything that we can put it through. Should the radio(s) succumb to injury, our service provider has qualified technicians and is very expedient in making repairs. Our down-time on repair is very low and we are very pleased with the results.

Jamie Coutts, Fire Chief

Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service, Town of Slave Lake / MD 124

2014 – Here we are 3 years after a wildfire burns out 40% of the Town of Slave Lake. Recovery is ongoing, and we are coming back stronger than ever. The fire service has seen many changes, including Firesmart programming, new equipment and added responsibilities. Kenwood Canada is one company that came to our assistance in our time of need. Our local supplier, Direct Current, put us in contact with Kenwood Canada. One requirement was very clear – we needed to build and enhance our communication network. Without hesitation, Kenwood Canada sent us twelve (12) brand new NEXEDGE digital portable radios, chargers, and extra batteries. After programming and user training, they were put to use in our firefighting operations and search and rescue program. Thanks to Kenwood Canada and our local distributor, our communications are better than ever.

2011 – I wanted to take a minute and write to the people that worked together to donate the radio equipment to the Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service. During the fires that burned and destroyed hundreds of homes in the Town of Slave Lake and Municipal District, 124 of our people used Kenwood radios exclusively. Over the last several years we have purchased many Kenwood products and have always had great performance and reliability. Through superior design and technology, along with incredible support from our dealer, we have realized our dream of having a radio communication system that we can be proud of. By adding NEXEDGE portables and mobiles to our fleet of radios our members can now feel confident moving to the digital age of radios.

Leigh Pearson, Search Manager

Vernon Search & Rescue

Vernon Search & Rescue have been using Kenwood radios for over 12 years and are truly impressed with the quality and reliability of the product.

When Kenwood first introduced the automatic GPS positioning feature in their radios, the Vernon Search & Rescue team was among the first teams in Canada to start using the feature to keep track of our members in the field. With the GPS tracking we are now able to keep tabs on all our members and know where they are at all times, very comforting for the search management team.

These GPS equipped radios have also played an important part in saving the lives of lost or injured persons in the back country of British Columbia. On one night during a blinding snowstorm, we were able to guide our team to within 25 feet of a badly injured snowmobiler and then guide them back out to safety.

When other Search & Rescue teams ask what kind of radio equipment do we recommend, the answer is one simple word, KENWOOD.
